A: The R2 Standard includes 10 core requirements that all certified facilities must adhere to:

  1. Scope: Identify and certify all processes, equipment, and materials related to electronics recycling.
  2. Hierarchy of Responsible Management Strategies: Prioritize reuse, followed by materials recovery for recycling.
  3. EH&S Management System: Maintain a certified Environmental, Health, and Safety Management System (EHSMS).
  4. Legal and Other Requirements: Comply with all applicable environmental, health, safety, and data security legal requirements.
  5. Tracking Throughput: Track and manage the throughput of all electronic equipment, components, and materials.
  6. Sorting, Categorization, and Processing: Evaluate, sort, and categorize equipment in accordance with the R2 Equipment Categorization (REC) reference document.
  7. Data Security: Provide secure and effective data sanitization for all data storage devices.
  8. Focus Materials: Manage Focus Materials (FMs) in a manner protective of worker health and safety, public health, and the environment.
  9. Facility Requirements: Meet specific facility requirements for processing and storage of electronic equipment.
  10. Transport: Ensure secure and responsible transport of electronic equipment, components, and materials.
